Do I have to use tanning lotion when I tan?
We often like to ask the question: Would you brush your teeth without toothpaste? The answer we get back is (usually) no, and there’s a logic behind it. Brushing your teeth without toothpaste will never yield the same results as brushing with toothpaste, and it’s simply not effective. Tanning lotion works the same way. Products formulated specifically for indoor tanning enhance and stimulate the body’s natural tanning process. Indoor lotions protect the moisture levels in your skin, allowing your pores to open up, and magnify your UV exposure. Many of the products we carry also help stimulate melanin production in the skin, which accelerates the tanning process even more. Dry skin deflects UV light, so if you are not using an indoor tanning lotion, you are wasting up to 70% of your tanning session.
Bronzers? No bronzers? Natural bronzers? I'm confused.
We categorize our lotions into 3 main groups: Intensifiers, Natural Bronzers, & DHA Bronzers. Intensifiers are colorless tanning lotions that stimulate melanin production in the skin and accelerate the tanning process without adding any artificial color, or DHA, to the skin. These lotions are an excellent choice for the beginner tanner. Natural bronzers utilize ingredients such as walnut shell or carrot extract to provide an immediate color to the skin, but, similarly to intensifiers, will not provide any self-tanning effects. DHA bronzers, on the other hand, are formulated to enhance the natural tanning process while also providing an extra boost of color through the use of DHA, which reacts with your skin to create an artificial tan. DHA bronzers are suitable for advanced tanners, or for those who want to see quicker color development.
Should I be concerned about getting cooked in the tanning bed?
There is a common tanning myth that leads people to believe that a person gets “cooked” while in a tanning bed, and that simply isn’t true. Ultraviolet light used in indoor tanning beds does not enter the body, in fact, it only penetrates about 2mm into the skin. In 2003, Smart Tan proved that tanning beds are unable to cook anything by having salon owners place raw meat in a tanning bed. After several hours in the UV bed, the meat was – not shockingly, uncooked. The conclusion? UV does not cook flesh!
Is UV radiation radioactive?
All light emitted from the sun is actually energy. Energy waves are sometimes referred to as “radiation” and UV light is sometimes called “UV radiation”. The terms “radiation” and “radioactive” often get mixed up, but they are not the same. Radiation simply means energy being discharged. Radioactivity is a special kind of radiation but is not related to UV light. Radioactive sources such as nuclear power plants and nuclear bombs create massive amounts of energy by breaking down atoms. UV radiation, on the other hand, is relatively low in energy and does not break down and emit ions.
I’ve heard that all dermatologists oppose sunbed use. Is this true?
Here’s an interesting twist: A 2015 survey commissioned by Grassroots Health found that 99 percent of dermatologists believe that UV is therapeutic in treating cosmetic skin conditions, 88 percent recommend UV treatment or use their own sunbeds to treat client’s cosmetic skin conditions, and nearly 30 percent of dermatologists refer clients to tanning salons as an inexpensive means of self-treatment.
Do I still need to wear sunscreen if I tan before my vacation?
Even if you've built up a base tan before heading out on vacation, we still reccommend using SPF on your trip. When someone with a base tan uses sunscreen outdoors, they essentially multiply the effectiveness of that sunscreen. Over the course of four weeks, the average indoor tanner is able to build up a natural SPF factor of about 4. An SPF 15 sunscreen applied to the skin of a person whose base tan has already made him/her 4x more resilent to the sun will actually create a net SPF of 60. Natural SPF x SPF of sunscreen = net SPF. So, while we still highly reccommend wearing sunscreen during your vacation, indoor tanning before you leave will make your sunscreen approximately 4x more effective.
I have psoriasis and/or eczema. Will tanning help me?
Many cosmetic dermatologists use UV exposure in their offices to treat cosmetic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema using a treatment they call phototherapy. Scientists have stated that UV light is nearly 100% effective for many dermatologic conditions and that sunbeds are very convenient sources of UV rays for patients who cannot otherwise afford the rigorous travel, time, and monetary commitments necessary to visit the dermatologist.
